Why your breaker keeps tripping
A tripping breaker is not a malfunction. It is a device doing exactly what it was installed to do. The question is which of five things it is protecting you from.

Start here
Work down the list. Most situations are answered in the first two rows.
Overload
Most common
Too much on one circuit. Trips after a few minutes of heavy use, and usually you can name what you turned on. Space heaters are the classic.
Short circuit
Instant
Hot touching neutral. Trips immediately and hard, every time, often with a pop. This is a fault, not a load problem.
Ground fault
Wet locations
Current leaking to ground. Common in kitchens, baths, garages and outdoors, and typically trips a GFCI rather than the breaker.
Arc fault
Bedrooms
An AFCI breaker detecting arcing. Sometimes a real wiring fault, sometimes a motor or an incompatible device. Needs diagnosis rather than replacement.
Failing breaker
Less common
Breakers wear out, especially after repeated tripping. Real, but it is the last thing to suspect, not the first.

How to narrow it down yourself
Note when it trips
Immediately on reset means a fault. After several minutes of use means an overload. That single observation splits the diagnosis in half.
Unplug everything on the circuit
Reset with nothing plugged in. If it holds, add devices back one at a time. If it trips with nothing on it, the fault is in the wiring.
Check for a pattern
Same appliance every time points at that appliance. Random and spreading points at the circuit.
Look for the obvious
A damaged cord, a scorched plug, a device that got wet. Often the answer is visible if you look at what is plugged in.
Feel the breaker
Warm is normal under load. Hot is not. If the breaker or the panel cover is hot, stop and call.
Count the outlets
If half the house is on one 15 amp breaker, you have found your overload and the fix is a new circuit.
The honest answer
The one thing never to do
We find this in St. Charles panels regularly, usually installed with good intentions.
Do not install a larger breaker to stop nuisance tripping. A breaker protects the wire behind it, not the appliance in front of it. A 15 amp circuit is wired with 14 gauge conductor, and the 15 amp breaker trips before that conductor overheats. Putting a 20 amp breaker on it does stop the tripping, by removing the protection — the wire will now carry more current than it is rated for, inside a wall, with nothing to stop it. Same logic applies to 20 amp circuits and 30 amp breakers. If a breaker keeps tripping the answer is finding the fault or adding capacity, never enlarging the breaker. This is the single most common dangerous DIY electrical modification, and it is invisible until it is not.

What homeowners ask us
Why does my breaker trip when I use the microwave?
Almost always an overload — the microwave plus whatever else is on that circuit exceeds its rating. The fix is a dedicated circuit for the microwave.
Why does my breaker trip immediately when I reset it?
An instant trip with nothing running usually means a short circuit or a ground fault in the wiring. That needs diagnosis rather than repeated resetting.
Can I just install a bigger breaker?
No. The breaker is sized to protect the wire, and a larger one removes that protection while leaving the same wire in the wall. It is a fire risk.
Why do my AFCI breakers trip for no reason?
AFCI breakers detect arcing, and some motors and electronics produce signatures that look similar. It can be a real fault or a compatibility issue — both are worth diagnosing.
Do breakers wear out?
Yes, particularly after repeated tripping, but it is an uncommon cause. Rule out overload and faults before replacing the breaker.
