What a panel upgrade costs in St. Charles

What drives the number
Panel swap vs. service upgrade
The single biggest factor. If the service entrance, meter and utility drop all stay, the job is roughly half.
Grounding and bonding
Older St. Charles homes frequently have inadequate grounding. Correcting it is not optional and it is real labor.
Panel location
A panel in a finished space, a tight closet, or somewhere that no longer meets working clearance requirements may need to move, which changes everything.
Circuit count

Do you actually need 200 amp?
Not always, and the honest answer saves you thousands.
A 200 amp service is the default recommendation because it covers essentially anything you might add later. But a 100 amp service in a house with gas heat, a gas range and a gas water heater has substantial headroom, and if you are not planning an EV charger or a large addition, upgrading may be spending for capacity you will never use. What matters is a calculated load rather than a rule of thumb. We run that calculation before quoting, and if your existing service is adequate and the panel simply needs replacing, we will quote the smaller job. The exception is a fuse box or a recalled panel — those come out regardless of capacity, because the issue is safety rather than amps.
