What an EV charger install costs in St. Charles

What drives the number
Distance from panel to charger
The single biggest variable. Every foot is conductor, conduit and labor, and long runs need thicker wire for voltage drop.
What the route goes through
An unfinished basement ceiling to an attached garage is easy. A finished basement, brick wall or crawlspace is not.
Panel capacity
If the load calculation says no room, you are looking at a panel upgrade or a load management device before the charger goes in.
Amperage
A 60 amp circuit costs more than a 40 amp one in wire and breaker. Many households do fine at 40, and it charges overnight either way.
Hardwired or plug-in
A NEMA 14-50 receptacle install is often slightly cheaper than hardwiring, but hardwired allows higher amperage on some units.
Permit
Required for a new circuit. Included in our quote rather than added later.
The honest answer
Before you buy the charger
Two things worth checking, because they change what you should order.
First, find your main breaker rating — it is the big one at the top of the panel, usually marked 100 or 200. If it says 100 and you have an electric range, dryer and water heater, the load calculation may come back tight, and you will want that answer before a charger is sitting in your hallway. Second, look at where you park relative to the panel, because that distance is most of the install cost and it may be worth mounting the charger on a different wall than you assumed. We are happy to answer both over the phone before you order anything. Buying a 48 amp charger for a house that can support 32 is a common and avoidable expense.

What if I cannot afford a panel upgrade?
Load management devices share an existing high-draw circuit, and most chargers can be set to a lower amperage. Both are far cheaper and still charge fully overnight.
