GFCI and AFCI, and why your older house has neither
These are two different devices solving two different problems, and they are the biggest safety improvement available in an older home for the least money. Most houses in St. Charles built before the 1970s have neither.

Shock protection
Detects current leaking to ground — through water, through a person — and cuts power in milliseconds. This is the one that prevents electrocution.
AFCI
Fire protection
Detects the electrical signature of arcing, which is what a damaged wire or loose connection does before it starts a fire.
Where GFCI is required
Wet locations
Kitchen counters, bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, outdoors, laundry areas, and near sinks.
Where AFCI is required
Living spaces
Bedrooms and most habitable rooms in current code. Requirements have expanded over successive code cycles.
Dual-function
Both
A combination device providing both protections in one breaker or receptacle. Common in new work.

Why older homes do not have them
GFCI requirements arrived gradually
Introduced for outdoor receptacles in the 1970s and expanded through subsequent code cycles. A 1955 house was built with none.
AFCI is newer still
Introduced for bedrooms around 1999 and expanded since. Anything older than that has it only if someone added it.
Existing work is grandfathered
Code generally does not require you to retrofit an existing installation. That is why a house can be perfectly legal and still have no protection at all.
Renovations trigger it
When you rewire or remodel a space, current requirements apply to that work. This is often when older homes finally get it.
Ungrounded circuits complicate it
A GFCI can protect an ungrounded circuit and is a legitimate solution — but the outlet must be labeled as having no equipment ground.
It is inexpensive to add
Often one device per circuit protects everything downstream, which makes it one of the best safety returns in a house.
The honest answer
Test yours this month
They are mechanical devices and they do fail, silently.
Press the test button on every GFCI outlet in the house. Power to that outlet and anything downstream should cut immediately, and the reset button should restore it. If pressing test does nothing, the device has failed and is providing no protection despite looking exactly the same as a working one. Manufacturers generally recommend testing monthly, which almost nobody does — quarterly is a realistic compromise. If you have no GFCI outlets in your kitchen, bathrooms, garage, unfinished basement or outdoors, that is worth fixing regardless of anything else on your list. It is a small job with a genuinely large safety return, and in an older St. Charles home it is usually the first thing we would recommend.
