We trace the circuit

Which outlets and fixtures are on it, what is drawing from it, and where the fault sits. Guessing at the panel end wastes your money.

We look for heat

Loose connections generate heat before they generate a fire. Warm devices and discolored terminals are the tell, and they are findable.

We check the neutral and ground

A surprising share of odd symptoms — flicker, partial power, tingling appliances — trace to a bad neutral or a missing ground rather than the hot side.

We fix the cause

If the real problem is an overloaded circuit, adding a dedicated circuit is the fix. Swapping the breaker for a bigger one is how fires start.

The one to never do

Do not put in a bigger breaker

It is the most common and most dangerous DIY electrical mistake we get called out behind.

A breaker is sized to protect the wire behind it, not the appliance in front of it. A 15 amp circuit uses 14 gauge wire, and a 15 amp breaker trips before that wire overheats. Putting a 20 amp breaker on it stops the nuisance tripping by removing the protection — the wire will now happily run past what it is rated for, inside a wall, until something gives. If a breaker keeps tripping, the answer is either finding the fault or adding capacity, never enlarging the breaker. We say this plainly because we find it in St. Charles panels regularly, usually installed by someone trying to be helpful.
